Chapter Eleven

A Rematch Proves to Be a Sore Subject

Derek Senior’s house was located west of the McAllister farm. His property was on the outskirts of suburbia. The small town was a little more than an hour from Manhattan. It lay within the same county where the new gym was being built.

By the time the jeep pulled up the long drive to Derek’s big modular home, Danny was excited to get out and spend the day with the guys.

Tired of being under Mitch’s watchful eye, he was looking forward to having time on his own. Still, Mitch didn't exactly make spending the day at his brother's house sound too enticing. He unlocked the jeep with anxious anticipation. “You can drop me off here, Mitch. You don’t hafta bring me all the way to the door.”

Mitch glanced at his youngest and then veered off to park. “Remember, Danny, be on your best behavior. When Junior's involved things tend to get out of hand. Regardless of his age, he still lives under his father’s thumb. It’s not unheard of for Derek to impose consequences on him or his friends.”

Danny hopped out of the jeep. “Okay, mom. I'll be good.”

Mitch leaned across the passenger seat. “Don't get lippy with me, boy. If I find out you were causing trouble, there will be additional consequences at home.”

“Yes, sir.” As soon as he shut the door, Danny began to have doubts about being there. Walking past the jeep toward the house, he reminded himself that he wanted to see the cousins again. He couldn't wait to get a chance to play ball and prove himself against the bigger guys.

Mitch rolled down his window to yell to his boy, “Call me when you’re ready to come home!”

“I will!” Danny shouted over the engine.

The gray clouds pushed heavy winds through the wheat crops of Derek Senior’s extensive fields. As the hazy afternoon sun fought to keep its place in the sky, Danny put his hand above his brows to block the glare. He gave a shaky wave to the brake lights on Mitch’s jeep as it backed up to turn around.

“Hey, Danny!” Mark ran over to greet the young man he met the week before. “I'm glad you could make it.”

“Thanks. I'm glad you guys invited me.”

“I wasn’t sure you’d be up for it after the way Junior carried on at the reunion.”

“It’s no problem. He didn’t bother me much. ‘Sides, he’s right. I won’t be near as good on my own. I came to find out if he’s as bad of a winner as he is a loser.”

“Trust me, he is,” Mark laughed. “It’s all part of his charm. Good to see it didn’t discourage you from coming.”

“Nah, it didn’t.”

“Great. Are you ready to play? We were about to pick sides.”

“I'm ready.” Danny walked over to the others a few steps behind Mark. He thought he recognized some of Junior's friends mingling around the open field. There were at least a dozen young men and a handful of girls.
